The breeze fluttered the leaves above her head as she trotted around the yard. Ears perked high, tail sailing in the wind; she was ready to discover the next best thing to her bone. Her head turned and for a moment she smiled at me before a butterfly flitted by her nose, taking her away from me once again. I watched from my lawn chair as she pranced below the orange wings of her new friend. Just as I thought she was about to snag it with her long tongue, she turned, directing her attention to the ground.
Her nose twitched as she lowered her head to the surface, searching for what, I had no idea. It wasn’t long before her snout was rooting through the grass, stopping suddenly, finding another treasure hidden well below the surface. Her paws clawed at the mysterious object until she came upon a rock. With excitement, she pulled the treasure from the ground and carried it to the garden where she set up camp, gnawing at it until a passerby caught her attention.
With a sudden yelp, she charged the fence hoping for a closer look at the children trailing behind their father on an evening walk. She pranced sideways down the fence line, snorting with excitement, as she got closer to the children. But like a popped balloon, her excitement disappeared just like the children had, behind a large bush that crept up and over the pickets of the fence.
To her surprise a brown spider lowered itself just out of reach of her nose and swayed, taunting her. She danced in circles underneath it, trying hard to get a better look. Without warning the air suddenly sucked in and boomed, frightening her. An aircraft now long gone had made its presence known. Out of sight jets screeched from their runway not far from our home. With tail between her legs, she scurried between mine and leaned in for comfort.
Her soft hair fell between my fingers as I stroked her head and whispered sweet reassurances into her ear. Not before long, with ears and tail back in their happy position, she bounced away once again to find another new treasure in her own special paradise called yard. Turning, tongue hanging from her mouth, she smiles her cute doggy smile and I know at that moment, that, there is nothing greater than seeing life through the eyes of innocence… even if it’s through the eyes of a puppy.
