My Life

Being Successful With No Motivation

Have you ever gotten to 3pm and wondered what you have done all day? Now that I am semi-retired, I find that my days are endless days of sameness and it has caused me to have a lack of motivation. I’ve never been the kind of person that had to deal with being bored or unsuccessful at things I set my mind to, but having no motivation can be a problem. What to do, what to do?

My husband still works full time, and by most people’s definition, he is a workaholic. Perhaps that is why he has been so successful. He clearly has no problem with motivation. So, when he comes home from work, there’s a part of me that frantically conjures up some “BIG” thing I did during the day to prove that I didn’t just sit on my derriere while he successfully changed someone’s life. That’s when I found out that I can be successful with no motivation… that I should be proud of that success.

What am I talking about? Well, I’m not talking about making my bed. Although, Admiral William McRaven would argue this it’s a great way to start your day if you want to be successful. (Make Your Bed) No, I’m not talking about every day chores around the house. I’m suggesting finding one thing you usually don’t do during the day or week. That one thing that once you complete it, you will feel successful. Like one day I cleaned out all the drawers in my kitchen. Another day I shredded a stack of papers. Another day I sprayed down the deck of all the dirt and grime from winter. When I completed each little “task,” I started feeling better about my days of sameness. I had something to share with my husband.

As people have found themselves trapped in their homes this past year, I have no doubt that there are lots of people experiencing lack of motivation. But now we have a solution that we all can agree is not difficult to do. We just have to find that ONE thing that can be done by dinnertime that will pull us out of our rut and give us a true feeling of accomplishment. What will be your one thing today? What will it be tomorrow? Mine, today, was writing this blog.
